WHY Autism?

After learning that his son, David, was severely affected by autism at age 5, Slatkin + Co. Founder and Chairman Harry Slatkin made a lifelong commitment to do whatever it takes to advance the field and help improve the lives of autistic individuals. In response, Harry, his wife Laura, and several close colleagues, co-founded NEXT for AUTISM.

what is next for autism?

NEXT for AUTISM is a nonprofit organization that transforms the national landscape of services for people with autism by strategically designing and launching innovative initiatives. Its team is laser-focused on quality-of-life areas that truly promote a meaningful impact on the lives of autistic adults and their families in four key areas: home, work, social, and health and well-being. Since 2003, NEXT for AUTISM has raised over 54 million dollars to support and fund quality autism programs throughout the country. Among them, NEXT has started two charter schools and built The Center for Autism and the Developing Brain, an institute in partnership with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia, and Cornell Universities that provides clinical care across the lifespan of individuals with autism.

“David, who is now 23, has been a part of NEXT for AUTISM’s communityand residential support initiatives over the past few years. While he has no language skills and struggles to communicate his thoughts and feelings, I know David has benefited tremendously from these important programs, which are helping him to live an active and meaningful life.” – Harry Slatkin

“Aside from having the most delicious and irresistible aroma, chocolate chip banana pancakes happen to be David’s favorite breakfast. Whether as an autistic child or now as an autistic adult, his face lights up every time my wife, Laura, makes them for him. This candle is for David.” – Harry Slatkin
